Biography

Melissa Simon, USA

Dr. Melissa Simon is an Associate Professor with tenure at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois in the Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Medical Social Sciences, and Preventive Medicine. She is Vice Chair of Clinical and Health Policy Research in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Her research merges social epidemiology principles with health services and health behavior intervention studies to improve health of poor and medically underserved populations. Her special focus is on immigrant communities in the U.S. who are culturally and linguistically isolated. She has several National Institute of Health funded patient navigator/community health worker based intervention studies working with Chicagoís Chinese and Hispanic communities to improve health and wellbeing especially in the area of cervical and breast cancer screening and control.She also was appointed by the Illinois Governor to lead a statewide breast cancer patient navigation initiative. She is the second American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology/Gant sponsored Institute of Medicine of the National Academies of Science Anniversary fellow.
Dr. Simon received her BA in psychology at the University of Chicago and a Masterís degree in Public Health in Epidemiology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She attended medical school at Rush University. She completed an Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at Yale University School of Medicine and a reproductive health fellowship at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. She lives with her husband and 4 children in Chicago.
