From 5 to 9 July Trieste, Italy, will host the EuroScience Open Forum

The EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) is a biennial, pan-European, general science conference dedicated to scientific research and innovation. Each conference aims to deliver stimulating content and lively debate around the latest advancements and discoveries in the sciences, humanities and social sciences.

ESOF 2020 will take place from 5 to 9 July 2020 in Trieste, Italy, the city that hosts the secretariat of IAP Health and IAP Science. The recently-announced programme includes a rich list of events focusing on sustainability, innovation and cooperation. Among the over 850 speakers there will be Nobel laureates Ada Yonath and Didier Queloz, Field Medalist Alessio Figalli, CERN Director-General Fabiola Gianotti, and IAP Young Physician Leaders Alumna Tolu Oni.

The 9th edition of ESOF will attract thousands of delegates to Trieste, the European City of Science 2020, during the week of the conference. Alongside with the Forum, the Science in the City Festival will be held between 27 June and 11 July 2020.

Several satellite events will take place as well, and will deal with many different topics - from internet governance, to the relationship between science and law (the complete list is available on the website www.esof.eu).

As Bruno Della Vedova, Local Scientific Programme Coordinator, summarized at the press conference:

"ESOF2020 will be a unique and extraordinary event for the city of Trieste, for the Adriatic macro-region, for Europe and not only: an appointment it would be a real pity to miss. We will have a rich programme, special events and moments of discussion for over 4000 participants from all over the world. Sustainability and innovation are the main underlying themes and the guide to the three tracks that characterise the programme: the scientific programme, the relationship between science and business, and the careers of the future. I am certain that, thanks to the excellent work carried out by the commissions in selecting the content and speakers, ESOF will be an arena for lively in-depth discussion on how innovation in every field of science must be the locomotive for change towards sustainable, responsible and coherent development, in line with the new European Green Deal strategy which, in 2050, will make Europe carbon neutral".

ESOF2020 Champion Stefano Fantoni added:

"ESOF2020’s programme gives shape to a vision to regenerate the future, capable of combining scientific rigor and democratic participation, International awareness and the relationship with the territory. Above all, by reflecting on sustainability and social involvement, the two guide lines of the Trieste edition, we want to show ESOF2020 delegates and participants that the future is not, a priori, a promise, nor necessarily a threat, but rather more simply something we can take possession of again together, starting from a broad discussion with science and technology." Around 170 events selected from more than 600 proposals submitted from all over the world, starting, of course, from Europe. More than 4000 participants from around 80 countries are expected in Friuli Venezia Giulia’s capital city, the European City of Science 2020”.

Registration for ESOF2020 is open.
