Biography

Dr. Kieling is a child and adolescent psychiatrist based in Porto Alegre, Brazil, who was recently appointed assistant professor at the Department of Psychiatry, School of Medicine, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. After an initial focus on childhood externalizing disorders, Dr. Kieling is now establishing his own research team, focusing on unipolar depression in youth (the leading cause of health-related disability in this age group). He is head of the recently created Adolescent Depression Program (ProDIA) at Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre. He authored more than 50 articles, including one on Global Child and Adolescent Psychiatry published in The Lancet in 2011. In this report, several issues regarding the mental health of children and adolescents were reviewed, with a special focus on low- and middle-income countries. Dr. Kieling currently serves as a contributing editor to the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and as an associate editor to Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Mental Health, the official journal of the International Association for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions. He also served as consultant to the World Psychiatric Association Publications Committee, when he organized workshops for editors of psychiatric journals from low- and middle-income countries in Prague, Beijing, and Buenos Aires.
